Out Of Hours
Emergencies
The out-of-hours service is provided by the Berkshire West Primary Care Trust and operates a Primary Care Centre at the maternity unit at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. After phoning for medical attention you will be encouraged to attend this centre whenever possible, as we believe it will offer ideal conditions for emergency medicine of the highest standard. If patients are too ill to attend the Primary Care Centre, a doctor will still be available to visit.
Who Should I Phone When I Need A Doctor?
Telephone your practice in the usual way, and you will either be given another telephone number or your call will be diverted.
What Hours Does It Operate?
The out-of-hours service operates every weekday night from 6.30pm to 8.00am and at all times Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays.
Who Will I See?
You will see one of the local GPs who work within the co-operative. Details of the consultation will be sent to your own doctor the following day.
Can I Just Turn Up At The Centre?
No. When you phone the emergency number, the doctor will either:
a. offer advice;
OR
b. invite you to attend the Centre;
OR
c. organise a visit
Can I Phone For Advice?
Yes. A doctor will always be available for advice.
What Are The Benefits?
At the Primary Care Centre you will be treated in ideal conditions for emergency medicine, where back-up facilities are immediately available.
Whether in the Primary Care Centre or visiting you at home, the GPs on call will be rested and alert with immediate access to all emergency services.
THE SERVICE IS DESIGNED TO MAINTAIN A HIGH STANDARD OF HEALTH CARE 24 HOURS A DAY.
